The Eighth International Campbell Collaboration Colloquium: Speaking Truth to Power, May 12-14, 2008, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Call for Submissions

Deadline for Submissions was January 14, 2008.

The theme for the 2008 C2 Colloquium is "Speaking Truth to Power: Evidence for Decisions in Education, Social Welfare and Criminal Justice". Submissions were received from researchers, policy makers, and practitioners.

Please note: All presenters must register and pay the full colloquium fee.

Types of Session Formats

  • Paper presentations
  • Poster presentations
  • Symposia
  • Workshops

Each type of session (except poster presentations) lasts 1½ hours.

Paper presentations

Presenters will have 15 minutes to make their presentation, followed by 10 minutes for questions/comments/discussion. A session will consist of no more than three presentations in all. Presentations will be matched according to topic as far as possible.

Poster presentations

Posters will be on display throughout the duration of the colloquium. The audience circulates among posters and stops to discuss papers of particular interest with the authors. Time will be allocated throughout the colloquium when authors will be available to discuss the work presented in their poster.

Symposia

In a symposium, participants present (for example) their views about a common issue or the results from systematic reviews with a common theme or their experiences of using evidence from systematic reviews in decision-making. Participants include a chairperson and two or three presenters. We encourage symposia in which new or diverse perspectives are presented, as well as symposia in which presenters represent different arenas, such as policy making, practice, and academic work. In any symposium, time should be allotted for audience participation; therefore, the number of presenters should be limited. A chair for the symposium must be arranged by the symposium organizers. At this colloquium, roundtable discussions can be submitted as symposia. In a roundtable discussion, one or two experts on a topic serve as hosts for a table. The discussion leader(s) make a brief presentation of the issue and then facilitate the discussion.

Workshops

The purpose of a workshop is to provide an opportunity for a small group of participants to acquire knowledge about a topic, or receive training in a skill needed to conduct a systematic review. Workshops may focus in depth on a specific content area, methodology or statistical technique or present an overview or introduction to a broader area of interest central to systematic reviews. Example topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Searching the literature and document retrieval
  • Protocol development
  • Data extraction and coding
  • Quality assessment
  • Basic meta-analytic methods
  • Dealing with heterogeneity
  • Advanced meta-analytic methods
  • Using software for systematic reviews
  • Presenting and communicating review evidence effectively
